Poetry – William Blake ‘Songs of Innocence & Experience’ Children read a series of Blake poems connected to their whole class reading text ‘Skellig’. Themes of childhood, creation and spirituality are explored. Text level discussion focuses on figurative language.
Fiction – Shaun Tan ‘The Arrival’ Children read a number of Shaun Tan short stories that explore themes of displacement (Eric, The Lost Thing). Pupils are then given the opening section from Shaun Tan’s wordless graphic novel, ‘The Arrival’, to discuss and unpick together. The scene depicts a refugee or economic migrant about to leave his family home. Discussion focuses on how the objects in the scene enhance the emotion. |
Grammar focus: Figurative/poetic language (similes, metaphors, personification, alliteration etc.); prepositions and prepositional phrases; characterisation through dialogue; dialogue to advance action.
Write an emotive narrative – ‘The Departure’ The children write an emotive narrative based on the opening pages of the ‘The Arrival’. This will comprise a setting description of the kitchen scene (demonstrating figurative language) and a dialogue scene between the man and woman. |
